You know that feeling when you have sat down and written out your goals or had a really
motivating conversation with an advisor or your leadership team and you have a clear vision
and direction for your life and business. It feels inspiring, and you have such a firm belief in your
ability to move forward.
Then life gets in the way. Crisis hits. A team member leaves. Your kid gets sick. There are so
many things that could happen, threatening to push you off the track you have laid out clearly
before you.
The key here is to hold loosely to the strategies (the daily implementation) but hold firmly to the
goal. Feeling like you have failed will deflate you and move your focus off-target fast. Being able
to adjust to the changing conditions around you is key to successful goal achievement.
After all, when you set your goals, you can’t see the future. You don’t know what you might be
navigating. After all, who could have predicted what we have experienced this year?
Cultivating flexibility is like a muscle you need to work at. Here’s how to help you do that and
stay on track for achieving your goals.
- Make a daily, weekly, monthly plan and continue to review it in light of your goals. You
may go a little off track, so readjust the following month to stay aligned. - Have a team around you to keep you accountable – there is no doubt that left to our own devices we’ll find plenty to fill the day with! Surround yourself with a team of people who
know your goals, support your vision and work alongside you to help you achieve them. - Think ‘want to’ not ‘have to’. Ruling yourself with an iron rod is not going to help you do much but cower in fear. Map out your goals with a sense of possibility and excitement.
When you have your mind, body and soul on board with your goals you are more likely
to stay connected to them. - Make it measurable – you need to be able to measure your progress. This becomes a
mental convincer when you are able to see what you are achieving in small chunks. - Ensure that your goals are achievable and align with your overall company vision, mission and purpose as well as your own values.
